It is a small organ on the left hand side of your abdomen ("patient's left", so to anyone looking at you it would be the right hand side), just under the lower edge of your ribs. The spleen is responsible for removing old platelets from your blood, creating cells that aid tissue healing, mopping up some bacterias that you're already immune to, and also helps create and store red blood cells. To clarify, it is not the same as your gallbladder (this seems to be a common misconception).
Your spleen is the part of your body that stores extra blood.
