If you are not blind the "picture" you see in front of you lets you know if you are upright or leaning to the left or the right. Your body's muscles are then told by the brain to put things to rights.
But the main aid to balance is the set of 3 coils in your ears, These coils are tubes which contain some liquid which contacts with microscopic hairs inside the "canals". The 3 canals are positioned so that they can detect your body position in the 3 lines of space. The canals send their information to the brain which then sends messages to the appropriate muscles in your body to get to work restoring your position.
Of course there are times when you are deliberately out of position; for example when performing gymnastics.
An internal state of balance is maintained by a term called "homeostasis". In order for the body to be balanced, it must maintain five functions. (1) atmospheric pressure (2) nutrients (3) oxygen (4) water (5) body temperature. Homeostasis describes the body's ability to maintain relatively stable in internal conditions even though the outside world is constantly changing. For example, when a persons body temperature drops, the hypothalamus (located in the brain: responsible for maintaining body temperature) sends a signal that the body is too cold and the hypothalamus will regulate the body temperature to a normal range. Any kind of homeostatic imbalance in the body could trigger severe illnesses.
Practicing alternate nostril breathing can help reduce stress, improve focus, and balance the mind and body. By breathing through one nostril at a time, it can enhance relaxation and promote a sense of calmness.
Homeostasis provides a stable internal environment within an organism, maintaining conditions such as body temperature, pH levels, and nutrient concentrations within a narrow range that is optimal for biological function. This balance allows cells and organisms to function properly despite changes in the external environment.

Their thick bushy tails help them balance on a wire. Kind of like tightropewalkers when they hold the balance bar. The bar helps them keep their balance so the dont fall over off the rope. The squirrel's tail is sort of like a built in balance bar, so it dont fall off the power line.
