What makes farts stinky?

The smell is the odour of the gases produced by the decomposition process. One of the gases is methane. It is very smelly, and flammable. (Don't try anything silly!) It also serves as a health/danger warning, because human excrement is full of germs, so the smell alerts us that there is something 'not very nice' about, and we then exercise due caution and avoid touching it.
