If i was ill and needed time off of work to recover, then i would phone my workplace straigh away to let them know. If they didn't answer the telephone, i would leave an answerphone message or just keep ringing until someone answered. This way i am letting them know as soon as possible, so they could get cover for me. If i was likely to be off longer than a week, then i would go to the doctors and get a doctors note. If i needed time off work, for example a holiday, then i would ask my manager about taking a holiday and then they would confirm whether it is ok or not.
