There are usually 7 characters that must be fulfilled in order for an organism to be considered living.

The simplest list of these characters would be that the organism was able to; be sensitive to its environment, reproduce, ingest and metabolise food, respire, excrete move and grow.

A better selection of characters would be;

- that the organism was composed of cells (either 1 or many)

- that the organism had a genetic molecule and was able to evolve (DNA is the base-unit of evolution)

- that the cell/s of the organism was/were enclosed by a cell membrane (life is self-contained)

- that the organism was able to carry out its own, self-contained, biochemical reactions

- that the organism was able to reproduce, grow and develop (pass its genetic molecule onto a future generation)

- that the organism was able to respond to its environment (either from a sensory, neurological or evolutionary way)

With the above list, signalling (endocrinologically or neurologically) may be essential as the self-contained nature of life. Immunological responses may also turn out essential as part of the definition, self-containment and self-protection of life.

Would a living thing be a living thing if it doesn't have one of the required characteristics of a living thing?

No. The characteristics of living things are: Movement, respiration, sense, growth, reproduction, energy and nutrition. You need to have all of them to be considered alive. e.g. A car moves, takes in air, uses energy and some have sensors that can sense their surroundings but you cannot say a car is alive.

What living thing is made up of no cells?

Every living thing is made up of cells. There is no such thing alive that is not made up of one or more cells. If the object/product etc. has no cells, then the thing is not alive. The cells in a living thing is what makes it alive and make it to continue living. There are many things that confuse people with whether the object is alive or not. If not sure, look through a microscope on the highest zoom lens and there is your answer or ask a local scientist.

Dead things are those who were once alive. Nonliving thing were never alive (ex. rock, viruses...) Living things are made up of units called cells, reproduce, are based on a universal genetic code (DNA & RNA), grow and develop, obtain and use materials and energy, respond to the environment, maintain a stable internal environmet and taken as a group, living things change over time.
