It is generally considered to be the first strong evidence against the theory of a luminiferous aether. It was thought earlier by many scientists that our universe contains a hypothetical liquid and rigid substance called ether and our earth is moving through it. As a matter of fact, an ether wind must be created as the earth is moving through a substance which is completely stationary.

The Michelson-Morley experiment was conducted to determine this ether wind. But then it failed as it couldn't detect any ether wind and was later on found that there is no ether in fact in the universe.
