Without cartilage, the bones, not only the vertebra, would grind together and wear out. This would cause a lot of Back pain. As you get older, you lose some of your cartilage (and I mean older than 50 years of age), which is why elderly people always have pains in their backs. Hope this helped!

Bones would rub together, causing excruciating pain, I believe this is what happens in some forms of arthritis.

the bone marrow produces red blood cells so if there is no bone marrow you would be dead but the bones will not be affected.
