A major function is the modifying, sorting and packaging of proteins for secretion. It is also involved in the transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes. The sacs or folds of the Golgi apparatus are called cisternae.

In eukaryotic cells, the Golgi bodies have two primary functions:

  1. Lipid biosynthesis - the generation of lipids that and essentail part of the cell membrane
  2. Protein trafficking - helping in the movement of surface proteins from the cytoplasm (where they are made) to the surface of the cell (where they function)

The Golgi body accepts modified proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum and then further modifies the proteins, packs them in vesicles and ships them to locations where they are needed within and without the cell. The Golgi is also the site of lysosome synthesis.

They derive glycoproteins and glycolipids from proteins and lipids. Lysosomes and cell wall materials except cellulose are produced. They also transport materials.
