Best Answer

Stratified squamous epithelium has many layers of flattened cells and function in protection. There are two types: non-keratinized: found in the lining of the mouth, the throat, the vagina, and the anus. The second type is keratinized and is found as the epidermis of the skin.

What kind of tissue lines the insides of your cheeks?

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

What type of tissue lines the esophagus and forms the skin epidermis?

Stratified squamous epithelial cells are what form the top two layers of the epidermis: stratum corneum and stratum lucidum. Then stratified cuboidal epithelial cells are found in the bottom three layers of the epidermis: stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale. (Stratum basale is only layer that contains nothing but mitotic cells. This layer contains melanocytes as well.) The entire epidermis, however is identified as stratified squamous because epithelial tissue is always identified by the type of epithelial tissue at the apical (top) surface.

Which type of epithelium is adapted to protect underlying tissues from abrasion and friction?

The stratified squamous epithelium consists of flattened epithelial cells arranged in layers upon a basal membrane. It's the thickest, and layers can be sloughed off and replaced before the basement membrane is exposed. It forms the outer layer of the skin and the inner lining of the mouth, esophagus, and vagina.

What type of epithelium can be found in the epidermis?

Stratified Squamous

How is epithelial tissue classified according to the number of cell layers?

There are four categories: Squamous â?? Cells are flat. Cuboidal â?? Cells are boxlike, with same height as width. Columnar â?? The cells are taller than wide. Transitional epithelium â?? Cells can vary from full/balloon-like to flattened, according to the distention of the organ they line. The three classifications by cell layers are: Simple - one cell thickness; Stratified - by appearance of uppermost cells; Pseudostratified - columnar structure that appears stratified, but isn't, due to the crowding of adjacent cells.

How do the shape of epithelial cells differ from cheek cells?

Epithelial cells of the Pulmonary surface, + epithelial duct elements of Glands, Ciliary epithelium, esophageal, germinal {of Ovaries}, glandular and membranous: Cornea, larynx, nasopharynx, small intestine, stomach, olfactory, pigments of the Retina. As well, here are the rest: Pseudostratified, seminiferous, simple, simple columnar, simple cubical, simple cuboidal, simple squamous, stratified, stratified columnar, stratified cuboidal, stratified squamous, surface - of stomach - , and transitional.

What is squamous cell?

Squamous cells are a type of epithelial cell. Epithelial cells are cells that line the surface of an opening. For example skin cells are epithelial because they line the opening of the skin to the outside air. The lining of blood vessels are squamous as well, because they line the surface of the blood vessels. The basic types of epithelial cells are squamous, cuboidal, columnar, and transitional. The description can become more detailed such as stratified squamous and pseudostratified columnar. Squamous cells are very thin, flat cells. An example of squamous cells stacked on top of each other (stratified squamous) would be the outer layer of your skin. In fact these squamous cells are kertatinized and contain no active nucleus, and function mainly as a barrier to your inner body.

What do Squamous epithelial cells mean on an abnormal pap smear result?

Squamous epithelial cells are the type of cells found on the cervix. That phrase on its own does not indicate any abnormality.

Is the epidermis composed of stratified squamous epithelium?

Yes. This allows for the skin to withstand friction/abrasion.
