Well, i believe the egg either can get fertilised while in the fallopian tube, on the way to the cervix, or it get fertilised when it reaches the cervix. so really, there is not 'waiting' . the sperm goes looking for it , wherever it may be .
Fertilization occurs when a sperm and egg unite.
The sperm fertilised the egg.
The change in the egg's covering is due to a process called the zona reaction, which is triggered by the entry of the sperm into the egg. This reaction helps prevent other sperm from entering the egg, ensuring that only one sperm fertilizes the egg.
The gametes, or "sex cells" - the sperm and ovum (egg) - become the fertilized egg (zygote) when they fuse.
To get to the egg the sperm has to first go through sexual intercourse and then the sperm travels in a liquid till it reaches the fallopian tube where the egg is to get into the egg the sperm uses its tail. (only a brief way)

The size of egg is larger than sperm because the the sperm enters inside the egg and egg has to accommodate the sperm. And egg contains fats and nutrients in order to feed zygote in case of pregnancy.
