All organs contained in the thoracic cavity plus many more..

According to Wikipedia, here's the suppl. information :

Structures within the thoracic cavity include:

  • structures of the cardiovascular system, including the heart and great vessels, which include the thoracic aorta, the pulmonary artery and all its branches, the superior and inferior vena cava, the pulmonary veins, and the azygos vein
  • structures of the respiratory system, including the trachea, bronchi and lungs
  • structures of the digestive system, including the esophagus,
  • endocrine glands, including the thymus gland,
  • structures of the nervous system including the paired vagus nerves, and the paired sympathetic chains,
  • lymphatics including the thoracic duct.

Ribs: protects the heart and lungs.

Skull: Protects the brain.

Backbone: Protects the spinal chord.

Pelvis: protects the bladder, lower colon, lymph nodes and vagina.

The skeletal system does protect many organs but it is by no extent all of them as the organs of the abdomen are totally exposed apart from some layers of muscle that hold them in place. The lunge and heart are protected by the ribcage. The brain is protected by the skull. The urinary bladder, parts of the colon, the rectum and the anus as well as the female reproductive tract (only in women obviously) are protected by the pelvis.

The skull and the rib cage.

Which structural joint type in not commonly found in the axial skeleton?

The synovial joint is not commonly found in the axial skeleton because it allows too much mobility for the axial skeleton where protection and support of internal organs calls for immobility. The axial skeleton consists of the bony and cartilaginous parts that support and protect the organs of the head, neck, and trunk.

What do you have skeleton?

We have a skeleton for a few main reasons. The first reason is because we need something to support our body, our muscles, everything in our body. If we didn't have a skeleton, we couldn't stand. The other main reason why we have a skeleton is to protect our organs and whatever else is in our body.

Functions of skeleton?

Support our body and protect our vital organs. Some of the bones of a skeleton are to protect organs such as the brain being protected by the skull, heart and lungs by the ribs etc and some of the bones are to provide movement such as those in the legs, arms, feet and hands in combination with muscles and tendons which connect them.

How does the skeleton protect the body?

This is a loaded question. The skeleton gives your body its formation or relative "shape". Bone Marrow generates red blood cells which are required to move oxygen and other nutrients throughout the body. The skeleton also "hides" many bundles of nerves and blood vessels which help protect them. The skull houses the brain and provides protection and lastly, the ribcage protects the vital solar plexus organs.

What is the general function of the axial skeleton?

It houses the organs.
