In the 1830's the German scientist Matthias Schleidenobserved a variety of plants and concluded that all plantsare composed of cells. Another German scientist, Theodor Schwann, made similar observations on animals. The observations and conclusions of these scientists are summarized as the cell theory, one of the fundamentals of modern Biology. THEODOR SCHWANN, MATTHIAS SCHLEIDEN, ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK,ROBERT HOOKE and RUDOLF VIRCHOW are responsible for the cell theory.

The cell theory is generally credited to Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, who in 1838 put forward the idea that all organisms consist of cells.

Schleiden examined plant cells; Schwann animal material.

It may be better to think of the theory as having evolved over some time.

The word cell was first used by Robert Hooke after looking at cork under a microscope.

Schleiden and Schwann extended the idea of cellular structure to all animals and plants, but it was not until 20 years later, in 1858, that Rudolf Virchow developed another major component of the theory: omnis cellula e cellula, i.e. all cells arise from pre-existing cells.

The theory was changed through the generations by millions of people, therefore, what we know now, is something made up by the human species, nobody knows who started it though...
