Pentadactyly (five fingered-ness) evolved several hundred million years ago, and we are direct inheritors of that evolution. Other extinct species had more digits, although these we all sea creatures that evolved paddles rather than legs.

Evolution allows for losses of digits (two, and three toed sloths for instance) but it doesn't allow for an increase in digits - any extra digits are likely to be a liability rather than an asset.
