Conifers tend to live in cold climates. The triangular shape helps snow to slide off them instead of lying in a heavy blanket on top of them, which is what would happen if they were the umbrella shape of rainforest trees.
The triangular shape also helps each needle-shaped leaf to receive the maximum sunlight.
