In the two that the female receives, one can carry genes for the orange color and the other can carry the gene for the black color and they are therefore, both expressed but males only get one X chromosome so they can only express EITHER black or orange. You cant have a male tortoiseshell animal so you cant cross two tortoiseshell animals (since you cant cross two females....).
