Why do farts stink?

The odor of farts comes from small amounts of hydrogen sulfide gas and skatole in the mixture. These compounds contain sulfur. The more sulfur-rich your diet, the more sulfides and skatole will be produced by the bacteria in your guts, and the more your farts will stink. Foods such as cauliflower, eggs and meat are notorious for producing smelly farts, whereas beans produce large amounts of not particularly stinky farts.

The fart has chemical gasses in it from your body. Many gasses in your body are quite odorous so when they leave your air tight body, you then smell it.

As the body digests foods, it essentially is rotting them down with different acids. This produces gases, and like all things that decompose (regardless of manner) it produces unpleasant smells. As your body cannot retain these gases it has to expel them from your body with an unpleasant smell.
