To get nutrients from the ground. You see, moss is nonvascular which means it needs to be close to the ground to collect the best nutrients to keep it alive. Also, the sperms only mode of transportation is by water to fertilize the egg. There are no insects to help it spread its genes.

Why do plants like liverworts need to live in moist environment?

Why is moss always found in a wet place?

They have no vascular tissue, so they must pass the water along by diffusion. The moist environment provides plenty of water to diffuse into them. They only have little rhizoids instead of roots, so they cannot get moisture from deep in the ground. They need a film of moisture for the sperms to swim to the eggs in the gametophyte generation. Hope this helps!!

Why do ferns club mosses and horsetails live in moist soil?

They live in moist areas because they depend on water for reproduction. In order for the sperm to reach the egg, it needs to "swim" through droplets of water. These plants, although they are vascular, don´t produce seeds but spores and they too need moisture to germinate.

Are mosses vascular or nonvascular?

Mosses are non-vascular because they have no vascular tissue inside of them. That is why mosses need to live near moist areas so they can absorb the water directly because they don't have long roots to absorb the water.

Do mosses grow in water?

Moss reproduces by having its cells split into two repeatedly. This process, known as asexual reproduction, is carried out best in warm, dark, and damp environments because: warmth makes them reproduce quicker, they do not need light [and actually prefer less of it], and because they require water to survive [basically for the same reasons we do, it's a very important componant to hello peepslife].
