We are constantly swallowing because our salivary glands are constantly producing saliva, which keeps our mouths and throats moist. Without saliva, the dryness would be unbearably painful. Ask anyone who has the condition known as "dry mouth". Fortunately, there are medications for dry mouth. Also, besides saliva being constantly produced, so are tears, which keep our eyes moist. The tears drain through tear ducts, down our sinuses and into our throats to be swallowed.
