The whole purpose of a red blood cell is to transport oxygen. This requires easy permeability - so the oxygen in the air gets to the hemoglobin inside the red blood cell. The thin membrane facilitates this transportation - a thick membrane would inhibit it.

cell membrane is not very thick because selected outside material need to enter the cell. if it is too thick this would not be possible. this is the reason why it is also called a selectively permeable membrane.
