I avoid stepping on lines because it creates a pattern and I feel comfortable. Also I have this feeling (it is not rational) that stepping on the line will somehow break the balance, it will disorganize things... it increases the entropy. If I step on a line, I will have the feeling (again, my rational mind knows it is not this way, but I have this terrible feeling) that everything that goes wrong is related to that incident. I also do other kinds of irrational things just to feel things are ok!

Why do transmission lines use alternating current?

Transmission lines use alternating current in order to support stepping-up and stepping-down of the voltage with transformers. Voltage is stepped-up at the power station, sent over the transmission lines, and stepped-down at the receiver. (This is a simplified explanation.) By stepping-up, you reduce the current carrying requirement of the lines, and they can thus be smaller. You could not do this with direct current as transformers only work for alternating current.

How are the lines and symbols painted onto a hockey arena?

They are painted onto the floor. Then the floor is covered with ice. Because the lines are under the ice, instead of part of the ice, resurfacing the ice won't remove the lines.
