Saline is salt water and mimics the bodies own natural fluids.
The purpose is to keep the eye moist, instead of dry as well as to maintain a proper PH balance.
This saline washout method functions via two methods: 1) Sterile saline washes viruses and bacteria from the nasal cavity and oropharynx to reduce the exposure and possible risk of becoming infected. 2) The hypertonic (solute or salt dissolved in the water) helps to draw fluid out of the tissue and prevents further accumulation of mucus and phlegm which traps these offensive particles. It is saline that has twice the concentration of salt as normal saline. Normal saline is 0.9% NaCl, so twice normal is 1.8% NaCl. Now I have a question. Is this ever given to patients?
