Meiosis is also called reduction division, because the result of meiosis is the production of cells with half the chromosome number of the parent cell (ie haploid cells). This is necessary so that when two gametes fuse during fertilization, the normal chromosome number is restored (ie a diploid cell).
If the chromosome number was not halved during gamete (germ cell) formation, the number would be doubled every time fertilization happened.
Somatic (body) cells do not undergo meiosis because the products of their division will not take part in fertilization. They divide by mitosis, which produces daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parental cell. Mitosis occurs during growth, replacing damaged cells and asexual reproduction.

Meiosis makes haploid cells that are different to each other and the parent cell. Meiosis is a type of cell division used for sexual reproduction and to create gametes.
Meiosis occurs in the gonads - the testes in males and the ovaries in females. It is a type of cell division that produces gametes (sperm and egg cells) with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
Meiosis is a special kind of cell division that produces haploid (1n) cells. During meiosis, a single cell goes through two cell divisions (meiosis I and meiosis II.) Meiosis takes place only in the reproductive tissues of an organism.
Cells produced by meiosis are called daughter cells which contain one haploid of chromosomes. So, these cells are called haploid daughter cells.
Meiosis is still important for the regrowth of cells in a sexually reproductive organism. For example even thought humans reproduce sexually they still have skin cells, like hair, finger nails, and even normal skin that produces new cells by meiosis.
Every cell, except reproductive cells, in any living organism divide through mitosis. Reproductive cells divide through meiosis.
Meiosis occurs in gametes or reproductive cells.
Body cells do not undergo meiosis. Reproductive cells undergo meiosis, body cells, mitosis.
