Semi-permeable means that which only allows certain things to pass through. The cell membrane needs to be semi permeable so that it only allows beneficial things (say, ions or water molecules) into the cell whilst keeping harmful things out (eg. toxins and viruses).

That's all. Hope this helps you (:

Does plant cells need a cell membrane?

Yes plant cells need a cell membrane. In addition to the cell membrane they also have a cell wall. Animal cells however do not have a cell wall but merely a membrane. A cell is not able to live without a membrane as it holds the organelles and cytoplasm in place.

Why do you need cholesterol in the cell membrane?

It prevents the lipids on the cell membrane from sticking together

Why does the cell need a cell membrane?

because they need to keep them self save

Does a cell wall need a cell membrane?

Of course yes

What regulates passage of materials into and out of cells?

The cell membrane controls movement of materials in and out of the cell.

What do animals have that replaces a cell wall?

A cell membrane. They don't need a cell wall.

Why does a cell with a cell wall need a membrane?

A cell that has a cell wall still needs a cell membrane because the two structures have different functions. A cell wall gives the cell shape, support and protection whereas a cell membrane controls what enters and leaves the cell. Also, the cell theory states that all cells have a cell membrane.

Which cell structure controls what enters and leaves the cell?

The selective permeability of the cell membrane

What is a good analogy for cell wall?

It could be a gate. It is a gate because the door is the cell membrane. See you need to get past the cell wall before the cell membrane.

What cell structures are made primarily from phospholipids?

cell membrane

Despite differences in the size and shape all cells have cytoplasm and a?

cell membrane!!! not ribosomes! -wrong plant cells have cell walls and animal cells have cell membrane, it might seem right but it is wrong. Nearly all cells have a mitochondrion.^ While the answer above is correct, the real answer is Cell Membrane. So all cells have cytoplasm, AND cell membranes.
