Chlorophyll is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesis carbohydrates from CO2 and water. This process is known as photosynthesis and is the basis for sustaining the life processes of all plants. Since animals and humans obtain their food supply by eating plants, photosynthesis can be said to be the source of our life also.

The energy plants have from water and light is converted from light energy to chemical bond energy.

Light is needed because the whole process won't work without light as light is in the equation carbon dioxide plus water equals glucose plus oxygen.

Sunlight (or bright artificial light) provides the energy for the reactions in the chloroplasts. One reaction creates organic molecules (ATP and NADPH) and a separate reaction performs photolysis (molecular photo-disassociation) of water, providing the hydrogen to form those carbohydrate molecules. (This is the source of the oxygen released by plants.)

Is Light needed in photosynthesis or respiration?

it is only needed for photosynthesis as we humans do not get our energy from light ( think about it we still breath when it is dark don't we)
