The smallest living thing (eats, excretes, responds, reproduces, utilizes energy) is a PPLO : a very small cell with (and this is only calculated) only 3 of each of the needed proteins within it's body. Bacteria appear to average ten.

Thus the PPLO is precariously balanced on the very edge of being able to maintain its life functions.
