Why is the middle finger the longest finger?

Because God made it that way. But I think He made it that way so that everything would be more even. Just imagine if it was the same legnth of your other finger; wouldn't be very balanced, huh? actually your thumb is your longest finger. it goes all the way down to your wrist.

there was a war in the 1800s over by new york between us and the Europeans and the Europeans would capture the archers and cut of there middle finger so they couldn't "pluck the u" or use there bow, so when the Europeans retreaded the archers would stick up there middle finger, showing that they could "pluck the u"

many different places i know that but i can tell you one of them.

Back in medieval times or something like that if the french captured a British archer they would cut off his middle finger so he couldn't fire his arrows. When the french attacked. The British archers stuck up there middle finger showing they still had it and would shoot them in there bloody head. XD

The legend of the middle finger goes back to the "Hundred Years' War", between 1337 to 1453. It was during the "Battle of Cadsand" when the English Army first unveiled their secret weapon; the longbow. They decimated the Flemish Army (allies of the House of Valois), and continued their push further into continental Europe. The French soldiers noticed that English longbow archers would pull back, or "pluck" the bow-string with their middle fingers. Because of this, any captured archers would have their middle fingers cut off!

During the "Battle of Agincourt", King Henry V enlisted thousands of archers to his cause. Although they were greatly outnumbered by the French, their arrows overwhelmed the army of King Charles VI, and forced their retreat. As legend would have it, as the French armies retreated, the English archers taunted them by raising their middle fingers in the air and shouting, "We can still pluck you!". Allegedly, over the centuries, the term "pluck you" was phonetically altered to the derisive phrase we commonly associate with this gesture.

This story is merely a legend. And it should be noted that this anecdote has never been proven to be a factual account of the origin of the middle finger, or of the "Battle of Agincourt" for that matter. However, it is widely regarded as the origin of the middle finger (and possibly the "F-Bomb" too).
