The theory of evolution by means of natural selection, Darwin's theory, has bee modified and added to in the over 150 years it has been in existence. Still, Darwin's theory formed the core of modern evolutionary theory and can still be considered essentially valid today.

Modern evolutionary theory, based on the modern synthesis of the 30's and 40's, is the bedrock upon which Biology is built.

Until On The Origin of Species, the entire world had believed John Lamark's theories of evolution. Considering the amount of criticism past scientist have received for disputing a widely agreed on topic, we must consider that Darwin's reputation was on the line. Especially if someone was able to prove that he was wrong. Also, Darwin's theory of natural selection is slightly harsh. Thankfully, Darwin published On the Origin of Species, and allowed us to clearly see how animals evolve.
