Trees use a process called photosynthesis to create food for themselves. A major part of this process requires Carbon Dioxide which is found in air. The food that they make is stored until its energy is needed. When the plant needs this food, it uses a process called respiration to break the food back into its raw materials and release the stored energy. A major component of this process is Oxygen which is again found in air. Without air they would die.

∙ 13y agoLike most animals, oxygen in the air is needed to support cellular respiration. Plants also need to undergo cell respiration to generate energy, but unlike animals, plants get their food sources from carbon dioxide and water

look up photosynthesis and guard cells.....the leaves exchange co2 and oxygen to aid photosynthesis to produce sugars for the plant.
