this concept states that mammals must expend a significant amount of energy to maintain a constant internal body temperature, animals with larger surface area to volume ratio(smaller mammals) must have higher metabolic rates because they must work harder to maintain that internal temperature. smaller surface area to volume ratio means more heat loss and thus, the more energy it must expend to maintain a constant body temperature. because smaller mammals have larger surface are to volume ratios, they must have higher metabolic rates because they must obtain and expend more energy to maintain the internal body temperature than larger mammals
