fruit flies take a long time to produce offspring

I think the above er may meant to have said that they do NOT take a long time to produce offspring.

Fruit flies have long been a favorite test subject for evolutionary scientists because of their fast gestation period and the ease of genetic manipulation of them.

Because the Drosophila Melanogaster are a good subject for many reasons one is that it only has four pairs of chromosomes and they are easy to see since they are huge for such a small fly. Also it reproduces quickly is inexpensive to feed and can be raised in small jars or vials . in addition, it is easy to tell the male from the female
