The process of water moving out of the salad leaves due to their higher salt content is osmosis. Osmosis involves the movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration, which causes the salad to wilt as it loses water content.

What impact does osmosis and diffusion have on life?

Osmosis and diffusion are essential biological processes that allow for the movement of important molecules such as water, ions, and nutrients into and out of cells. They help maintain proper cell function, hydration, and nutrient uptake, enabling organisms to survive and thrive. Any disruption in osmosis and diffusion can have detrimental effects on cells and organisms.

How does osmosis and diffusion work in amoeba?

Amoeba obtains oxygen via diffusion; it takes in water by osmosis, but I would think this is more of a problem, since Amoeba lives in a freshwater environment, and water is always entering by osmosis. Amoeba's problem is getting rid of that water, which it does by means of contractile vacuoles.

What 3 ways can substances enter and leave a cell?

Substances can move in and out of a cell in several ways. Diffusion is when a substance will distribute itself in or out of a cell until the distribution on both sides of the cell is balanced. Active transport is when a cell transports a substance across the cell membrane that would not normally be able to pass through. Osmosis is the movement of water from areas with few dissolved dissolved substances to areas with high dissolved substances.

What type of transport does not require energy?

Passive transport does not require energy, as it involves the movement of molecules across a cell membrane without the input of energy. This includes processes such as diffusion, osmosis, and facilitated diffusion.

What is the movement of molecules from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration until equilibrium is met?

The movement of particles from an area of high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to an area of low concentraton is the process of diffusion. I'm sorry but I do not think that answer is good enough. It is a form of diffusion, where only small particles, small enough to pass through the membrane can get through. When I was in school the statement above was the definition of osmosis, the whole point being it was diffusion through a semi-permeable membrane, selecting for only small enough particles. It seems some time between 1992 and 2003 the definition was changed to the movement of water, and not particles and now in 2010 the definition is the movement of solvents. I would like to know how and why the definition osmosis was changed, why and what is the justification? I would also like to know why the original meaning of osmosis, which made perfect sense, has been changed to "it's the definition of diffusion and not osmosis any more", when in fact it isn't a clear enough word to describe the process? Surely the new definition of osmosis is also diffusion?

Would you expect osmosis and diffusion to the stop when substances are evenly distributed?

Yes, osmosis and diffusion would theoretically slow down and eventually stop when substances are evenly distributed. This is because there would be no concentration gradient, which is necessary for osmosis and diffusion to occur.

Are diffusion and osmosis types active transport?

No. (Active xport would be in the opposite direction.)

Why are the processes of osmosis and diffusion essential for life?

Because without them, your nipples would not produce mountain dew.

Why is Osmosis Jones wrongly titled?

Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a membrane. Diffusion is when particles move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration without the use of any energy. So, in the movie, Osmosis Jones is really a white blood cell (a cell that combats "evil" disease or illness. The the movie would have been titled fine as Osmosis Jones if Osmosis simple diffused from one place to another inside the body. However, that would have been really boring and the studios would have lost their shirts!

How would diffusion differ from osmosis?

Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules across a semipermeable membrane from a region of a lower concentration to a higher concentration. Diffusion is the movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration down a concentration gradient

If you're buried alive in a non-airtight box under sand would your oxygen supply be maintained by osmosis?

No, osmosis would not replenish your oxygen supply if you were buried alive in a non-airtight box under sand. Osmosis is the movement of water across a membrane, not the diffusion of gases like oxygen. Your oxygen supply would deplete as you consume the available oxygen in the enclosed environment.

What is net movement of substances across plasma membrane without additional energy?

Diffusion. With the need of energy, it would be called active transport.
