Can a hawk eat a mole?

I had a real problem with moles in the back yard. In area about 30'x30' moles had run all sorts of tunnels in the early March in Maryland. We had also noted the presence of a red shouldered hawk - screaming around overhead establishing his territory. We were also able to notice he was building a nest, about 30' up in a tree, in the woods behind the house. One day we noticed the hawk on the grass in the backyard, right in the middle of the mole runs. Just as we noticed the hawk, it was in the air and leaving. No sign of the mole since that day. No doubt the hawk got the mole, but I am curious if it was a visual or scent. Does anyone know how this beautiful bird hunts for such varmints?
