No. Birds have a very poor sense of smell. That little myth began pretty much as a way to get little kids and people who don't know what they're doing from interfering with nests and fledgling birds. If there is an obvious nest, go ahead and put the chick back then leave, the parents are there somewhere watching, hiding until they're sure the nest and chick are safe to go back to. The birds won't be able to smell you on the chick.

Birds actually don't have a great sense of smell so most healthy birds don't smell like much, they rather use their showy colours to communicate. The bird with the best sense of smell though, and therefore the smelliest is the vulture. They eat carrion which might explain their strong smell. There are many species of vultures and they are found all over Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. !
