usually just up onto a tree branch. Domestic turkeys weigh too much to fly.

Wild turkeys can fly 45mph for short distances. Small domestic turkeys can flutter to a rooftop.

Wild turkeys are excellent fliers, and often roost in trees at night to protect themselves from predators. Domesticated turkeys (the ones that end up in the roasting pan) are poor fliers due to selective breeding that has increased the chest muscle mass significantly. This causes the bird to weigh too much relative to its wingspan and bone frame to be able to fly effectively. However, domestic turkeys can still hop and 'boost' themselves up 3-5 feet even if they cannot truly fly.

Turkeys used to be able to fly but not now. We have bred them in such a way that their body weight cannot be supported by their wings ergo they cannot fly.
