A stiff hard feather is called a quill. These feathers are located on the wings and tail of birds, providing structure and support for flight. Quills are used in writing instruments such as pens.
Common birds typically lose their tail feathers through a natural process called molting, which occurs annually or seasonally, allowing them to replace old, worn feathers with new ones. Tail feathers may also be lost due to accidental damage, such as collisions with obstacles or predation attempts. In some cases, birds may lose feathers as a result of stress or health issues. Overall, feather loss is a normal part of a bird's life cycle, helping to maintain flight efficiency and overall health.

Open the trunk and pull the lining (carpet) away from the area near the tail light. There are pins holding it in place, but just give it a tug and it will pop loose. Then just loosen the wing nuts and the tail light will come loose from the outside.
