I just saw this today. A smaller hawk (one of the babies in the hood), was eating one of my woodpeckers (the family that lives in the tree by my deck). I did not think that hawks eat birds, especially with all the rabbits and squirrels around this area; but I definitely saw it, and watched it for some time (picking out the feathers and then to the good stuff). The woodpecker was a full size one, not one of the babies. The woodpeckers are the black and white ones, and some have the red crest on their heads!
Normally one of the things that eat woodpeckers are hawks!!!!!!
Predatory birds such as eagles or hawks are known to eat downy woodpeckers.
Gila woodpeckers are very fast and do not have a lot of predators. However, they cannot escape hawks and other raptors, who do eat them.

Yes, hawks eat rats.
no, hawks don't eat crabs
Woodpeckers will eat small tree frogs. In addition, the woodpecker will eat small lizards, birds, eggs, nestlings, and fish if it is available.
Eagles and hawks have been known to go after woodpeckers, even though woodpeckers are extremely fast. They can also fall prey to coyotes and wolves if they are near the ground.
