Several things needed to be done to halt the decline of bald eagles. One simple way was to enact legislation that would protect them from hunters. The more insidious dangers, however, were not discovered immediately. There was the discovery in the 1970s that certain herbicides and pesticides caused Brittle Shell Syndrome, resulting in very few eagles (and other birds too!) being born. DDT was banned in the United States once this information was made known. As a result, many raptors and other birds now are making a marvelous comeback. Penguins are found in the Southern Hemisphere because they evolved in that region. Large penguin species, like the Emperor penguin, are adapted to the extreme cold and harsh conditions of the South Pole. Similarly, smaller penguins in the Northern Hemisphere are better suited for the milder climate and different environmental pressures found in the Arctic.
The growth of the Northern region of the U.S. began during the Industrial Revolution. Much of the free land in the South was used for growing tobacco and the climate was also more suited to this. The Northern region therefore had more free land on which to build factories.
Pomegranates typically grow during the warm months of the year, with the fruit ripening in late summer to early fall. In the Northern Hemisphere, this usually occurs from September to November. The growing season begins in spring, with flowering occurring in May and June. Pomegranates thrive in warm, dry climates, making them well-suited for regions with Mediterranean-like conditions.
