Drill a hole slightly bigger than the hang wire through an old spray can lid. Slide the lid onto the wire. Seal the gap between the hole and the wire with silicone or hot glue. Pour some water in the cap. Do not use oil, because some small birds drink from ant moats. The best way to use an ant moat is to put the cap on upside down, then coat the inside of the cap with a product called Tanglefoot, which is available at nurseries and maybe Wal-Mart type stores. Something else that's sticky but won't dry out would also work.

To create a hummingbird ant barrier in your garden, you can use a moat filled with water or a sticky substance like petroleum jelly around the base of your feeder pole. How can I attract hummingbirds to my garden with a feeder while preventing bees from being attracted to it?

To attract hummingbirds to your garden with a feeder while preventing bees, choose a feeder with bee guards or built-in ant moats. Place the feeder in a shaded area away from bee-attracting flowers and keep it clean to avoid attracting bees with spilled nectar. Use a nectar mixture with a higher concentration of water to deter bees, as they are more attracted to sweeter solutions.
