Cockatiels mate when the male sits on the female for a few minutes. They both make a particular chirp when this happens, so you will know! This goes on for a few weeks. There has to be a nest box, or likely there will be no eggs. Once there is a box and the male has decided it's okay, then the female will lay her eggs. They will switch off sitting on them for about 18 days. You will know because the droppings will get HUGE and they will try very hard not to go in the cage. So let them out and take them to a floor that is easy to clean! They are holding it for up to 12 hours and they want to keep the nest and area around it clean. So help them by letting them out to relieve themselves. They will not want you near the eggs, but you have to check occasionally to see if one egg is dead (it will be a different color and smell). Take it out because the other eggs will die too! Then when they start hatching - don't touch - don't help. If the bird doesn't make it out - it would be dead soon anyway. The birds MUST come out on their own so they are hungry and chirp loud enough and for long enough that it will indicate to the parents they are healthy and are worth their effort to feed them. If they do not feed the babies and you try to feed the baby, it will die. The parents know if the baby is unhealthy. It's best if it passes quickly. The birds will all need a LOT of food of variety for many weeks as they feed the birds. It take many weeks for the birds to eat solid food on their own. Don't remove them early unless you are a experienced hand feeder and never before four weeks. If you handle the babies once they are two weeks old or so, they will be tame. Hand feeding is not a must if you are home and can interact with them. Respect the parents if they fight you when you are checking the nest. Try to do it when the parents are out of the cage. Never at night. You must remove the baby droppings from the nest often so that bacteria doesn't grow. Use pine in there and smoosh it down with your hand so it's "packed" so to speak. And have fun! The babies are pretty fantastic! Good luck! And if it doesn't succeed the first time (the babies die or the eggs don't hatch) take the nest box out for a number of months. The parents are tired even from the trying and need to rest. You don't want the mom to lay eggs over and over because she could die from exhaustion. So give them time and let them try again down the line. Some birds can do it, some can't. Just be patient. Good luck!
