Swans, like most birds, are largely diurnal. However, at times they will adapt their routine to whatever is safest so they can go about feeding without disturbance. If they get a lot of harassment from humans they will gradually learn that humans are not around at night and so will become increasingly active during periods of darkness. If they are used to being fed by humans, however, and have learned that humans pose no threat, they will sleep mostly at night when there is nothing to be gained by staying awake.
