How do you know if an Australian parrot is male or female?

This depends entirely upon the species of parrot, of which there are hundreds in Australia.

Generally, parrots such as cockatiels are easy to sex. The males have brighter cheek patches than the females. Other parrots tend to have males which are more brightly coloured. Male budgerigars have brighter blue on their cheeks and above their beak (the cere), as opposed to a white cere on the female, or a brown one in breeding season. Female galahs have pinkish coloured eyes rather than black eyes.

However, other parrots such as corellas, some species of lorikeets and rosellas, and sulphur-crested cockatoos require a vet to sex them. They are almost impossible to tell apart because there are no external differences. An expert can also tell the difference in the width of the pelvic bones: females have pelvic bones further apart than males.
