How do you treat a bird who plucks its feathers?

Give it more attention or remove it from the environment that is causing it stress. There is a medicine or treatment available from a Vet. that may help it stop. I'm not sure of the name, something like Pluck no more but any Vet. that treats birds should know what it is. It may be as simple as making more time for the bird. I have 7 and it can be demanding at times giving them as much attention as they want.

A bird will pluck it's feathers from stress or from not getting enough attention. Try and figure out what the problem is and fix it. Move it's cage, lower the noise, give it toys, handle it more. Any of these may help. If it goes on too long, it will probably continue until it is bald. All birds need attention and handling. If they don't get it or have a mate, they will become self destructive.

You have to make the bird happy. Birds do not pluck their feathers out in the wild. This would be detrimental to their survival. Captive birds will pluck their feathers out because they are stressed. The cage might be too small and cramped for a bird that size. If it cannot flap it's wings without touching the sides of the cage, then the cage is too small. The bird might be terribly bored and he needs more toys, things to hold on to and bite, treats, and just things to do in general. Boredom can be a terrible thing when you are held captive. Where did you get the bird from, and how recently? If he was in a home or shop with other birds, and now it lives alone, it could be sad. Is he in a cage with another, more dominant bird that could be bullying him? Is there a dog, cat or child that could be scaring the bird? There are many reasons a caged bird will pull out it's feathers. You must figure out the reason and remedy the problem or he will live a miserable, cold existence.

It's not the question of how to stop it but what is causing it? Feather plucking usually comes from either boredom or stress. So ask yourself this, Is my parrot getting enough out of cage time in a day? (Parrots need at least 2-3 hours of free a time and interaction with humans) Does my parrot have enough toys? (These birds a highly intelligent so they need lots of things to do and different things all the time so try switching out his toys weekly) Is something stressing my bird out? (Another pet, a sound of some kind, to much movement in the house, ect)
