How does one identify the sex of a dove?

Male pigeons (cocks) are larger and more territorial. Females (hens) are smaller and more passive. Because of the electrolytes in their body, you can use a magnet cut into a stip with a pointed end and on a string and hold it about a 1/2 inch above the pigeon's body. Make sure there isn't any breeze that will push the magnet around, and don't have the magnet too close to your own hand. Ideally, the magnet will swing in a circle if it is a hen and in a straight line if it is a cock, but this is not always reliable. The magnet usually takes a minute or so to show the gender, the first swing or two is not usually accurate. If you have two birds that are nesting, it is usually obvious which is the cock and which is the hen even if you don't observe them mating or see which one lays the egg. The hen will spend more time on the nest, and the cock's job is to protect it and bring straw for the female to build the nest with.

I haven't as yet found anyone that can be exactly sure of sexing youngsters, but I find that I can mostly tell by their behaviour when they are over five to six weeks old. Cocks are by far the more pushy especially if they are in good health, they are also usually bigger than the hen especially when compared to a sister that's hatched with them. I have been told to look at the head, the cock is much flatter whereas the hen is more rounded. This appears true on several in many instances but there are many occasions where I have been fooled.

A male dove is more beautifl, a little bigger and more shining than a female dove. If you are a good shooter, you may easily tell a male dove from a female one. There are also certain other means of identifying the sex.
