A baby raven is commonly referred to as a "chick." At this stage, they are often covered in down feathers and are dependent on their parents for food and care until they fledge and learn to fly. As they grow, they develop the characteristic glossy black feathers of adult ravens.
Black raven (or crow) feathers are considered to be a foretelling of a death.

American Indian tribes number in the hundreds. Each of those tribes has their own beliefs. The animal world always played an important part in their belief system. The raven played a different role and had a different meaning to each different tribal system.
