Beagles are highly intelligent. Most simple commands (sit, stay, lie down, come, crate, etc) can be taught over a few weeks. The more you repeat the command, especially with a treat and a body motion (a snap, clap, pointing, hitting your thigh or chest, etc) the more the dog will understand it, and follow it. Beagles are crafty, but they love to please. Even if your dog is not a puppy, it will still learn fairly quickly. It only took my 3 year old beagle 2 weeks to learn the command "crate", and we only said it once a day.
