This very much depends on the breeder/petshop and how tame the bird is.

The average price at the moment for a handtame cockatiel is anywhere between £30 - £70 and the average price for a non-tame cockatiel is about £30 or below.

Surprisingly little. Bags of seed can cost between £1.69 for 1kg of simple millet and sunflower seed mix, up to £3.50 for a 500g bag of aromatic Australian parakeet mix.

I find that buying both types and mixing them together (kept in an airtight container) can provide enough food to last a good month or two.

Newspaper is better for the bottom of their cage than sandpaper since they rarely visit the floor anyway since it can be changed more frequently and is more absorbant. It's also a lot cheaper and softer on the soles of their feet. Special petsafe cleaning sprays can cost up to about £3 per bottle but these often last a while so would be every other month you'd probably need to buy one of these.

Cuttle fish bones cost about 50p each or less and last for months.

They don't mind drinking tap water so that is pretty much free and the odd stick of celery costs next to nothing (although change these regularly as they can wilt and rot).

I guess a rough estimate would be about £5-£6 per month or so which is really quite cheap.

Other than that, it is up to you how much you spend on their toys etc. I do suggest trying to find natural wooden branchs, however. Mine seem to prefer these much more than the plastic ones. :)

Unfortunately, I have to warn you that in the case of injury or sickness, though, some vets tend to charge big bills, so it is worth phoning vets just to see which offer the best prices. At the same time, be careful to find a vet that does know about treating birds.

• the country you are in
• whether the birds are hand-reared or not
• whether you buy from a pet shop or a backyard breeder
• the colouring of the bird may also influence the price

Looking at advertisements in Australia, hand-reared baby cockatiels vary in price from $50 to $150.
