Depending upon where you live most female birds are referred to as hens while most males are called cocks although different species of bird have different names for their males. For instance, a male chicken is a rooster, a male duck is a drake, a male swan is a cob, a male goose is a gander and so on.

Birdo's gender has been switched from male to female over the years, but I think Birdo is better of as a female because she has a relationship with Yoshi. But, if Birdo is actually a boy, then both he and Yoshi are considered gay.

But, I truly believe Birdo's a girl.

Depends on the species, but almost always not.

In fact, humans are almost unique that the female displays more striking plumage in social settings than the male. (Look at the Oscars ceremony if you doubt it)
