The ostrich is the largest bird, but it doesn't hide its head in the sand. That's just an old story, and rather silly at that. What the ostrich does do, in good company with geese among others, is that it will occasionally eat some sand and gravel. The gravel mainly stays in the stomach and helps with breaking up the food.
