Seeing an owl in the daylight, or having it look through your window, or even hearing one hoot three times is supposed to bring bad luck or even death. This is because owls are supposed to have eaten the souls of the living after swooping down on Halloween.
It sounds like an untrue superstition. How would this "bring death"? If it were true, it must work very slowly - a white owl crossed my path many, many years ago and I'm still very much alive!
