The Harrier Hawk or Kahu is New Zealand's most common bird of prey. It is common sight in the sky all over New Zealand. It's most common food these days seems to be road kill so many die in collisions with traffic. Although they are wonderful fliers they are very slow in taking off so often cannot avoid oncoming traffic. If it is safe it is good idea to move dead animals to the side of the road to save these birds. New Zealand's other much rarer bird of prey is the New Zealand Falcon or Karearea is smaller and is a much better aerial acrobat catching other birds in flight.
